Glen Scrimshaw's newest creations defy expectations**—original paintings on handpicked rocks, where natural flaws become part of the art. It all began with an alien, a burger, and a eureka moment at a Saskatoon market—now, these quirky originals are collector favourites! Unlike anything else in Glen's celebrated career, each rock is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, priced surprisingly lower than his other original works. Why rocks? "The imperfections inspire me," says Glen—but the real surprise is what these sales support? Every purchase helps protect Saskatoon's Meewasin Valley, turning art lovers into conservation supporters.
Glen Scrimshaw's journey into painting on rocks began, as the best ideas often do, by chance—and a little bit of magic.
For years, Glen has carried "lucky rocks" in his pocket, drawn to their unique shapes and textures. But it wasn't until recently that those stones became his newest canvas.
It started with an alien.
While searching for the perfect rock to paint a whimsical alien head for his UFO-loving father-in-law, Glen stumbled upon two stones with just the right otherworldly shape. The first became the alien; the second, after a few days of contemplation, transformed into **ET**—a surprise gift for his wife. Both were instant treasures.
What began as playful experimentation soon turned into something more. After painting smaller rocks for fun, Glen decided to think bigger—literally. A "Deluxe Hamburger" rock emerged, followed by a cheeseburger, each piece showcasing his signature detail and humor.
Then came the moment of truth.
At the Saskatoon Gather market, a burger vendor (Deadly Dan) noticed Glen admiring his creations. When Glen showed him a photo of the "Rock Burger" he had painted, the response was immediate: "How much?" Sold on the spot—from just a picture.
From there, demand grew. Painted rocks featuring "Northern Lights, lightning storms, and moonlit landscapes" became instant favourites at art shows, with collectors drawn to their one-of-a-kind charm. (And let's be honest—owning a "Glen Scrimshaw original" at this price is a rare opportunity!)
After a wildly successful showcase at "Broken Spoke Gallery" in Maple Creek, Glen and Zorka decided it was time to share these unique pieces online. Each rock is hand-selected for its natural imperfections, which Glen embraces, turning cracks and textures into part of the artwork's story.
"But there's more to these rocks than meets the eye."
With every purchase, a portion of the proceeds supports the **Meewasin Valley Authority**, helping to protect the natural beauty of Saskatoon's river valley—a landscape that inspires Glen's work every day.
"Timeless Shelf Originals" are more than just painted stones—they're tiny, tactile masterpieces with a purpose.
Check back often—new rocks appear when you least expect them. 😎
